Russell Wilson predicted to land on NFC team with desperate head coach and GM image

Russell Wilson is one of the biggest names remaining on the free-agent market.

While several other quarterbacks have either re-upped with their teams or left for greener pastures, Wilson remains available. A return to the Pittsburgh Steelers seems more and more unlikely, so the veteran could end up signing elsewhere.

Nick Brinkerhoff of USA Today recently predicted the best landing spot for each of the remaining top free agents. For Wilson, Brinkerhoff sees the New York Giants as the most likely landing spot at this point.

Regarding Wilson and the Giants, Brinkerhoff offered the following:

Assuming Rodgers goes to the Steelers, Wilson would almost certainly end up playing for “Big Blue” in 2025. Options are no longer aplenty for the 36-year-old quarterback, who isn’t the star he once was. It was a fairly pedestrian season for Wilson with the Steelers, who might end up bringing him back if Rodgers heads elsewhere.

“Mr. Unlimited” is now anything but, meaning Wilson is now at the mercy of the open market. If it’s the Giants, New York could opt to pair him with a rookie quarterback while trying to compete for a playoff spot in 2025. The 13-year veteran will land somewhere, and the Giants might just be the leader in the clubhouse right now.

In 2024, Wilson threw for 2,482 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. The veteran looked serviceable at times, but the Steelers may have been soured by Wilson’s late-season struggles that resulted in another quick playoff exit.

Wilson may have lost a step or two, but the quarterback was among the league’s best just a few seasons ago. In 13 seasons, Wilson has earned 10 Pro Bowl selections and led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory.

Wilson has thrown for 4,000-plus yards four times in his career and led the NFL in passing touchdowns once. The veteran doesn’t use his legs as much as he used to, but he did rack up 155 yards and two rushing scores in 2024.

Adding a veteran like Wilson makes sense for the Giants. Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are both on thin ice in New York, and the duo may not have the luxury of waiting on a rookie passer to develop.

If that’s the case, Daboll and Schoen could decide to roll the dice with Wilson in hopes of saving their jobs.

Spotrac projects Wilson to land a two-year deal worth $38.7 million annually. Over the Cap projects the Giants to have around $31 million in remaining cap space, so some maneuvering may need to be done to bring Wilson in.
