Former Indianapolis Colts safety Julian Blackmon has had a quiet free agency thus far, but things could pick up after the first wave has passed.
With the majority of significant deals already concluded through the first week of free agency, teams are still on the hunt for talent and depth. The Philadelphia Eagles are no different coming off their Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Considering the Colts made an uncharacteristic splash in free agency, adding Cam Bynum on a four-year deal worth $60 million, it’s safe to say that Blackmon won’t be donning the horseshoe moving forward.
Because of that, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report feels Blackmon would be a “terrific fit” to join the reigning Super Bowl champs.
“The Philadelphia Eagles would be a terrific fit for Blackmon. He could be a proverbial chess piece in Vic Fangio’s defense, used specifically in advantageous coverage matchups,” Knox wrote. “The Eagles just traded safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and were interested in Justin Reid before he signed with the New Orleans Saints, according to NFL insider James Palmer.”
A versatile defender, Blackmon has been one of the intriguing talents working in the Colts secondary since he was taken in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Utah product has had success both as a free safety and a defender working toward the line of scrimmage.
However, the biggest detriment to his game has been his availability. Blackmon entered the league working his way back from a torn ACL he suffered during his final collegiate season. After a promising rookie campaign, Blackmon suffered a torn Achilles in 2021 and has dealt with various shoulder injuries over the last few seasons.
Spotrac is currently projecting Blackmon to receive a three-year deal worth $24 million in free agency, which would be a solid deal for both parties.
