The New England Patriots have spent big in free agency. They could add another piece to help protect Drake Maye as they try to turn things around.
The Patriots have already signed Morgan Moses to help out on the offensive line. Teven Jenkins, who remains unsigned could also be a player the Patriots target in the second wave of free agency. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox tabbed the Patriots as a fit for Jenkins.
“The New England Patriots could also give Jenkins a starting opportunity,” wrote Knox. “New England’s line was a mess last season, and protecting Drake Maye should be a priority. Patriots assistant offensive line coach Jason Houghtaling also held the same position in Chicago last season.”
Spotrac projects Jenkins to sign a three-year, $31 million deal in free agency. While the Patriots are likely still in the market for a pass catcher, Jenkins is an affordable player who could give the Patriots much-needed help on the offensive line. The 27-year-old has made 38 starts for the Bears since being drafted and has the ability to play both guard and tackle.
That type of versatility could be a real asset for Mike Vrabel as he looks to get the Patriots back into the playoffs. However, he has struggled with injuries throughout his career.
“Of course, if Jenkins didn’t carry some questions, he’d be off the market by now,” wrote Knox. “Availability has been an issue for the Oklahoma State product, who has appeared in only 45 games of a possible 68 in four seasons because of injuries.”
