Kesha has opened up about an ex-boyfriend dumping her after she took a friend to Taylor Swift’s afterparty instead of him.

The star previously shared this anecdote on X in March of this year, when she was prompted to share her worst date story.

“I got dumped bc I didn’t take a guy to the Taylor swift afterparty,” she bluntly tweeted at the time.

And in a follow-up tweet, Kesha clarified that this wasn’t even a new relationship as she wrote: “We were together for a year and a half.”

Now, in a new interview with Elle, the singer admitted that the whole reason she didn’t take him to the party was because she was starting to suspect that he was only with her because she is famous.

“I had a feeling that he was in it for the wrong reasons and was a bit of a starfucker,” she explained. “I decided to test that theory and took one of my friends instead of him to Taylor Swift’s party. He came over the next day and broke up with me.”

While Kesha did not name the ex, she did suggest that he is her most recent one and served as partial inspiration for her fun-loving single “Joyride,” which was aptly released on Independence Day of this year.

“It was me busting the door back down and saying, ‘No, no, it’s time to party again!’” she said of the song. “We’re going to start with having fun, and then I’m going to try to dismantle all the shady shit.”

Kesha said that the whole experience proved to be a bit of a wake-up call for her when it comes to romantic relationships.

“I’m only going to enter into a partnership again if someone treats me as well as I treat myself,” she told the publication. “I kept hearing people say, ‘I’m looking for The One.’ I kept waiting for somebody else to fill that space, and then I just stepped into it myself.”

“You gotta be all those things to yourself — your own boyfriend, sugar daddy, rich husband, best friend, cheerleader,” Kesha went on. “I started taking myself on vacations, buying myself six dozen roses, and taking myself for shopping sprees at Saint Laurent.”

“Yes, I take myself on fucking really bougie dates, like really celebrating the fuck out of myself,” she proudly confessed. “Then ‘Joyride’ started being written in my mind. I was like, God, I am The One, though.”

And while Kesha did admit that she finds dating in Los Angeles akin to “digging through the garbage,” she confirmed that she is still open to falling in love again.
