The Boston Red Sox are set to reunite two of their brightest young stars. Weeks after Marcelo Mayer made his highly anticipated debut, the Red Sox are calling up fellow top prospect Roman Anthony on Monday, as confirmed by multiple reports. Katie Morrison-O’Day, MassLive’s Triple-A Worcester beat writer, even shared a video of Anthony confirming his journey to the majors.
Mayer, fresh off his own big-league arrival, expressed excitement for his teammate. “I’m super excited for him,” Mayer told The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier. Red Sox fans undoubtedly share that enthusiasm.
Anthony, MLB.com’s top-ranked prospect, comes to Boston after an impressive stint with the Triple-A WooSox, where he slashed .288/.423/.491 with 10 home runs in 58 games. His readiness was undeniably highlighted on Saturday when the 21-year-old outfielder blasted a 497-foot grand slam with an exit velocity of 115.6 mph, just a day after enthusiastically watching Mayer hit his first big-league homer.
Anthony, Mayer, and Kristian Campbell form the “Big Three” of Red Sox prospects, widely expected to anchor the team’s lineup for years to come. Campbell himself added to the trio’s memorable weekend by hitting his first home run since May 13 on Sunday night.
While Anthony isn’t in Monday’s lineup, his call-up comes as right fielder Wilyer Abreu is reportedly heading to the injured list, according to Speier. This move clears a spot for Anthony in Boston’s outfield, potentially playing alongside Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela. Red Sox fans could see Anthony, Mayer, and Campbell all in action together as early as Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
