Adelaide Crows’ Izak Rankine is under AFL investigation following an alleged on-field incident during their thrilling win over Collingwood. Find out what sparked the controversy and what it could mean for the star player.
Izak Rankine will face an AFL integrity unit investigation.
The AFL’s integrity unit is investigating an alleged incident involving Adelaide Crows star Izak Rankine.
Reports on Sunday night indicated that Rankine may face scrutiny for allegedly using a homophobic slur during the Crows’ match against Collingwood on Saturday.
On Monday, the AFL confirmed it was aware of the matter and that the integrity unit is conducting inquiries.
An Adelaide spokesperson stated the club is “aware of an alleged matter involving one of our players” and confirmed ongoing discussions with the AFL.
Crows captain Jordan Dawson, speaking before Monday morning training, said the club would wait for the AFL’s decision.
“It’s not ideal, but it’s obviously in the AFL’s hands. We’ll let them investigate and see what happens,” Dawson said.
“If found guilty, Rankine — one of the league-leading Crows’ key players — could risk missing the remainder of the AFL season.
Earlier this year, West Coast’s Jack Graham was suspended for four games for using a homophobic slur in an AFL game, while Sydney’s Riak Andrew received a five-game ban for the same offence in a VFL match.
Adelaide faces North Melbourne in its final home-and-away game on Saturday, aiming to secure the minor premiership. After that, the Crows could play at least two finals, potentially up to four if they take the long route to the grand final.
