NEW YORK — Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s day looked destined for heroics: he’d already hammered a home run and a bases-clearing triple, adding four RBIs to help fuel a 12–5 rout of the Oakland A’s at Yankee Stadium. But the afternoon took a sharp turn in the sixth inning, when a freak injury during a checked swing left him grimacing in pain and racing down the tunnel .
Chisholm—who has been a key sparkplug since returning from the injured list on June 3—appeared to injure his right wrist or hand during the swing, his bat jolting unnaturally as he screamed in pain. Stephenson captured the moment: he “walked straight to the dugout and down the steps”, bypassing the celebration.
Remarkably, he returned to the field in the seventh inning, jogged back to third base, and remained in the game.
“He’s an incredible healer” — Optimism from the Dugout
Manager Ashley Weinrib praised Chisholm’s toughness:
“If something good was happening… he remained out there,” Weinrib said.
“Is he an incredible healer? Or will we learn more postgame? We just don’t know yet”.
Despite the scare, Chisholm’s return allowed him to finish with a homer, a triple, and four RBIs— his most productive day since rejoining the lineup.
Since returning from an oblique injury, Chisholm has been exceptional. In 23 games, he’s slashing .318 with a .979 OPS, reinvigorating an offense struggling with consistency during June slumps.
His power-speed combination—12 homers, 10 steals—plus a knack for electrifying plays, has earned Chisholm praise as a “game-changer”.
Leader Aaron Judge said:
“He can change the game on both sides of the ball” .
Chisholm is scheduled for further medical evaluation today. The club may order imaging to rule out a hooked hamate bone injury, similar to the one that sidelined Andrew Benintendi in 2022
The Yankees will monitor his wrist closely over the next 24–48 hours.
Despite the uncertainty, Chisholm remains determined:
“I’m just out there to help my team win,” he said
With the Yankees in the thick of the AL East race—and several key bats slumping—his presence is critical. Aaron Boone added:
“His game is so electric… When he’s at a high level it energizes everyone”.
Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s performance showcased why the Yankees acquired him: raw power, speed, and game-changing energy. While the wrist injury casts a shadow, his courage in finishing the game and optimism afterward are reflective of his character and value to the team.
